Nagasaki Yugaku – Dreaming of Nagasaki
January 17 - March 4, 2026

During the Edo period (1603-18168), Nagasaki was the only port in Japan open to Chinese and Dutch ships. For Japanese people, who were forbidden to travel abroad, it represented a dream destination―a place where they could experience foreign cultures firsthand. People from all over Japan came to Nagasaki in search of the knowledge and information that arrived from overseas. The exhibition focuses on these traveling students, known as yugakusha in Japanese, and looks especially at what they encountered in Nagasaki: the exotic sights they witnessed, the extraordinary days they spent, the people they met, the disciplines and arts they studied.
If we think of Edo-period Nagasaki as a university, we might thus wonder what kind of campus life were the yugakusha living, how were the professors and the other students they met, and what types of subjects they studied.
Welcome to Edo-period Nagasaki’s open campus!
